The Write Stuff Review

Opal Fire--Well, to be honest with you, I was looking on the Amazon free kindle books and this one had a really cute cover. So, I made an informed decision and got it. It is about a town full of unique characters and Stacy Justice (great name, right?) is trying to deal with the fact that her witch powers are growing stronger, as well as solve a mystery, hold down a job, deal with two handsome men who are vying for her attention, and keep tabs on her insane family Poor Stacy. She is such a great character, nice and snarky--that's how I like 'em. It's written with such a great voice, there were times I laughed out loud. I liked it so much that I read the sequel: Bloodstone--Oh, Stacy. What have you gotten yourself into this time? A teenager shows up in town claiming to be Stacy's sister and telling her that she has a clue to Stacy's (their) mother's dissapearance. I liked this one even more than the first. More snark, more giggles, and I am finding myself thinking about the eccentric characters even now, days after I finished the book. I spent a great deal of time with my Irish grandmother and her sisters when I was young. Anyone familiar with the culture of the Emerald Isle knows it is steeped in superstition, supernatural phenomenon and women who can lift bicycles over the heads without breaking a sweat. (My grandmother worked in a Schwinn factory). Often I would imagine--listening to them wax on about the prom date that disappeared through the cemetery bars--that they were witches implementing spells into the food the were cooking--and perhaps they were. Because I believe there's a little bit of witch in every woman. Although the potions may only be as exotic as a Cabernet and the spell may come in the form of a kind ear and chocolate layer cake, still, there is strength within us that can transcend any problem. There's something magical about that. I wanted to create a character who had that kind of strength and that special form of magic. Stacy Justice, the protagonist in my gemstone series, is a strong woman who worries more about her family than her boyfriend. She's more interested in excelling at work than the latest shoe sale and above all, she tries to do the right thing. Which isn't always easy when your family is driving you crazy, your grandmother insists you are witch with a high calling and oh yeah, someone is trying to kill you.

Q: You were a bartender at one time – what’s the funniest story a customer ever told you?Oh wow, great question. I once had a guy tell me he went to New Orleans on Halloween and was robbed at gunpoint by Tweetie Bird. The man was about 6'5, a former football player, and he was dressed like Mickey Mouse. He didn't even bother telling the police. A year later, I was robbed by a clown in New Orleans. He took my engagement ring, but I shook him down and got it back. It was ugly. Balloons were flying everywhere. Both true stories. You can't make this stuff up.Q: What’s your favorite drink to mix, and have you ever created a drink from scratch?I can tell you my least favorite drink to make--a mudslide--or anything with ice cream. Those drinks take far too many steps and when there are seven customers barking orders at you the last thing you want to do is turn your back on them. Don't ever order one of those. Not only does it piss off the bartender who has to make it, it really pisses off the drunk behind you who just wants a Bud Lite.
